My Mother’s thoughts on the protests against President Obama’s speech to school children… (I share her opinion)
This furor is sadly reminiscent of towns in Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, and in Little Rock, Arkansas in the mid fifties. Immediately following the passage of Brown v Board of Education, rather than follow the law of the land and send their children to school with black children; white parents kept their children out of school, school districts suspended operations for the school year, and white Christian churches along with ‘good’ white citizens opened private schools for their children. Not-so-fast forward to 2009… what do these parents think?
If their children neither see nor hear, President Obama, then they won’t have to acknowledge that he is president?
These folk have tried nearly every trick in the book… tea parties, birther conspiracies, virulent, disruptive, orchestrated town hall meetings, and now this.
What will be next?
In 1851 in Akron, Ohio, the great freedom fighter, abolitionist, and womanist, Sojourner Truth was scheduled to speak at a women’s rights convention. As she rose from her seat to make her way to the podium, the crowd began to whisper, boo and hiss. They became more intense and began screaming, “don’t let her speak, don’t let her speak”. At the podium, she delivered her powerful, now legendary speech, “Ain’t I a Woman”. On tomorrow, perhaps Barack Obama, the 44th president of the United States, as he stands at the podium affixed with the seal of the president, should say “Ain’t I the President”
The funny thing to me (this is Terence talking now) is how conspicuously the mildly sensible media has avoided saying that ALL OF THIS is about RACE. They keep trying to reduce the uproar to political squabbling completely ignoring that the only reason anyone is up in arms is because of the ethnicity of the president’s father.

Well, the reason they don’t say it’s about race is that it isn’t. Other people have long memories too, not just your mother. They remember things like Communist propaganda promoting the infallibility of the Great Leader who could do no wrong. And they don’t want their kids to be spoon-fed that stuff.
See, not everyone sees everything through the prism of race. Some people realize there’s more to history, and more to politics, than just race issues. They also realize that disagreeing with the president doesn’t make you a racist.
Try not playing the victim for a while. Free your mind.
Oh, and remind your mother that the stuff she remembers from the mid-Fifties was FIFTY YEARS AGO. Before I was alive. Before you were alive. Before most people who are alive were alive. If you choose to keep that stuff alive, it’s on you.
Not on me.
Oh my god! yes Mom look! I caught one! They actually exist! The bait worked! now if could only enable avatars so when people see you in public they could scare you by throwing red colored objects at you like nerf balls and t-shirts, I bet if they speak in faux russian you would have a panic attack.
